The UK's Best Solar EV Charger

The myenergi Zappi is the UK's most popular solar-integrated EV charger, chosen by homeowners who want to maximise the value of their solar panels. Unlike standard chargers that draw entirely from the grid, the Zappi can detect your solar surplus and automatically divert it to your vehicle — effectively charging your car for free during sunny days.

East Anglia's above-average sunshine hours make the Zappi particularly effective. A typical 4kW solar system in Cambridgeshire or Suffolk can provide 60-80% of a typical driver's annual charging needs free of charge. At public charger rates of 60-80p/kWh, that represents £600-£1,000 in annual savings on top of your bill savings from the solar panels themselves.

Zappi Charging Modes Explained

Fast Mode

Charges at full 7kW from the grid regardless of solar output. Use when you need to charge quickly or don't have solar panels.

Eco Mode

Prioritises solar surplus but tops up with grid power to maintain minimum charge rate. Recommended for most users with solar — balances speed and free solar charging.

Eco+ Mode

Charges only from solar surplus — no grid power used. Will stop charging if solar output drops below the minimum threshold. Ideal for maximum free charging but can be slow in winter or cloudy weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Zappi different from other EV chargers?

The Zappi is the only mainstream EV charger designed specifically to work with solar panels and battery storage. Its three modes — Fast (grid only), Eco (solar priority with grid top-up), and Eco+ (solar-only, waits for surplus) — let you charge your car for free from your own solar generation. Most other chargers simply charge as fast as possible regardless of your solar output.

How much does Zappi installation cost in the UK?

A Zappi 7kW tethered or untethered charger costs £800–£1,100 installed by our OZEV-authorised team. This includes the charger unit, cabling to your consumer unit, earthing, and commissioning. Cable run length and consumer unit condition can affect the final price — we confirm exact costs during your free site survey.

What's the difference between Zappi and Ohme?

The Zappi excels at solar integration — if you have solar panels, Zappi is the market leader. The Ohme ePod is better for smart tariff optimisation without solar, using vehicle API data to schedule charging at the cheapest grid times. If you have solar panels and want to maximise free charging, choose Zappi. If you charge purely on off-peak tariffs, Ohme is strong.

Can Zappi charge from battery storage?

Yes. With a compatible battery system (Fox ESS, SolarEdge, or myenergi hub), Zappi can be configured to charge from battery storage as well as direct solar. This extends effective "solar charging" into evening hours after generation has stopped.

Is 7kW or 22kW better for home charging?

For most UK homes with single-phase electricity, 7kW is the maximum available and adds approximately 30 miles of range per hour. A 22kW charger requires three-phase electricity, which is uncommon in residential properties. For solar integration, a 7kW Zappi perfectly matches typical solar output and is the right choice for 95% of homes.
