How Long Does Solar Panel Installation Take? Day-by-Day Guide

Most home solar installations are complete in 1-2 days. We explain exactly what happens on each day, what to expect, and how long you need to be at home.

How Long Does Solar Panel Installation Take? Day-by-Day Guide

One of the most common questions from homeowners considering solar is: how disruptive is the installation? The good news is that a standard residential solar installation is remarkably quick. Most homes are completely done in one or two days, with minimal disruption to your daily routine.

Here is a clear picture of what happens on installation day, what work takes place inside versus outside, and when you will need to be home.

Day 1: Roofwork

The installation team (typically 2-3 people) arrives at 8am. The first task is erecting scaffolding if not already in place from a pre-installation scaffold. Roof fixings (hooks or brackets) are installed into the roof structure, and the mounting rails are attached. On a standard pitch roof with good access, this takes 2-3 hours.

The panels are then lifted and clipped onto the rails. A standard 10-panel (4kW) system typically takes 3-4 hours to mount. By early afternoon, the roof work is usually complete. The team works safely on the roof — you do not need to be outside, and most of the noise (drilling into the roof structure) is brief.

Day 1: Electrical Work

While some of the team work on the roof, an electrician begins the internal wiring. DC cables run from the panels down through the roof and loft into the location of the inverter (usually in a garage, utility room, or loft). The inverter is mounted and wired. The AC connection to your consumer unit (fuse board) is made.

This is the part that requires access to your property. You need to be home, or a responsible adult needs to be present, during the electrical work. The electrician will need access to your loft, the inverter location, and the consumer unit. A brief 20-30 minute power cut is needed when connecting to the fuse board.

What If You Have Battery Storage?

Adding a battery extends the installation to a full two-day job for most homes, or a long single day for smaller systems. The battery unit is mounted (wall-mounted in the garage or utility room is most common) and wired between the inverter and your consumer unit.

Systems like the Fox ESS EVO or Tesla Powerwall 3 combine inverter and battery in a single unit, which simplifies installation. The additional day for battery installation is well spent — your installer will set up the monitoring app, configure your smart tariff settings, and ensure everything is communicating correctly.

Day 2: Commissioning and Handover

On the final morning (or afternoon of day 1 for simple systems), the installer carries out commissioning. This includes testing every panel with a DC tester, checking all electrical connections, testing AC output, confirming the monitoring system is live, and completing the MCS documentation.

The handover takes 30-45 minutes. You will be shown how to read the monitoring app (on your phone), how to interpret the inverter display, what to do if the system raises an error, and how to access the generation data for your Smart Export Guarantee application.

After Installation

Within 48 hours of installation, we register your system on the MCS database and send you your MCS certificate. You use this to apply for Smart Export Guarantee payments from your energy supplier. We include step-by-step instructions for the SEG application with every installation.

Scaffolding is removed typically 1-2 days after installation (sometimes on the same day for simple properties). After that, your roof looks the same as before except for the solar panels. Most neighbours will barely notice the installation happened.
