What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative designed to encourage homeowners to replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives. Launched in April 2022, the scheme provides upfront capital grants to reduce the cost of installing heat pumps.

The grant was originally £5,000 but was increased to £7,500 in October 2023. The scheme budget has been nearly doubled to £295 million, and applications increased 67% in 2024 — demonstrating strong demand. The scheme is currently confirmed to run until at least March 2028. For a full breakdown of heat pump pricing and brand comparisons, see our heat pump costs guide. We install heat pumps across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk.

Am I Eligible?

You own the property (homeowner or landlord) in England
The property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
There are no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations on your EPC
Your current heating system uses fossil fuels (gas, oil, LPG, electric)
The property is not a new build (must have been occupied for at least 12 months)
You are using an MCS-certified installer (like Green Hat Renewables)

EPC Insulation Requirements

If your EPC recommends loft or cavity wall insulation, you must install this before applying for the BUS grant. We can arrange insulation as part of a combined package if needed.

How We Handle the Process

1

Free Home Assessment

We visit your property to assess insulation, radiators, and heating requirements. We check your EPC and confirm eligibility.

2

System Design & Quote

We design the optimal heat pump system and provide a detailed quote showing the cost before and after the £7,500 grant.

3

BUS Application

We submit your BUS application to Ofgem. This is typically approved within 2-3 weeks. You do not need to do anything.

4

Installation

Once the voucher is approved, we schedule and complete the installation. Typically 2-4 days for a full system.

5

You Pay the Net Cost

You only pay the invoice amount minus the £7,500 grant. The grant is paid directly to us by Ofgem — you never handle the money.
