Wisbech is the largest town in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire and one of the most significant food processing locations in England. The combination of a large food industry, extensive commercial buildings, and a town centre undergoing economic regeneration makes Wisbech one of the most interesting renewable energy markets in East Anglia.
Green Hat Renewables covers all of PE13 and PE14 from our Isleham base, 20 miles to the south. We have installed solar systems for both residential properties in Wisbech town and commercial food processing operations in the surrounding Fenland industrial areas.
Residential Solar in Wisbech PE13
Wisbech has significant Georgian and Victorian terraces in the town centre (the celebrated North Brink overlooking the River Nene is one of England's finest Georgian streetscapes) alongside 20th-century estates in the suburbs. Solar panel costs for PE13 residential properties are consistent with the wider Cambridgeshire market.
- Victorian terraces (Church Terrace, North Brink area): Listed or conservation area restrictions may apply to front-facing panels. Rear panels routinely approved. 3kW–4kW systems. Cost: £3,900–£5,800.
- Inter-war and post-war semis (Leverington Road, Lynn Road): Standard permitted development. Most south-facing roofs. 4kW systems most popular. Cost: £4,700–£6,500.
- Newer detached housing (PE13 outskirts): Larger roofs, ideal for 5kW–6kW+ systems. Cost: £6,000–£9,000.
- PE14 (Wisbech St Mary, Elm, Murrow, Coldham): Rural villages, mix of property ages. Many off-gas properties. High heat pump demand alongside solar.
Commercial Solar in Wisbech: The Food Processing Opportunity
Wisbech is home to major food processing operations including Produce World (Havelok), Keelings, Del Monte, and numerous smaller packhouses along Cromwell Road, Boleness Road, and on the Nene Industrial Estate. These facilities combine large flat roofs with high electricity demands — the ideal combination for commercial solar.
A typical 50kW solar installation on a Wisbech packhouse roof (cost £33,000–£38,000) generates approximately 47,500 kWh per year, saving £14,000–£16,000 at commercial electricity rates. After the 100% Annual Investment Allowance tax deduction for a corporation tax payer, the effective cost drops to £24,750, giving a payback of under 2 years.
CERP Warm Homes Grant for Wisbech Households
Wisbech sits in the Fenland district, which participates in the CERP (Cambridgeshire Energy Retrofit Programme) Warm Homes Local Grant. Income-qualified households (below approximately £36,000, EPC D or lower) in PE13 can access grants of up to £15,000 for heat pumps, insulation, and solar panels as part of a whole-house retrofit.
This is separate from — and stackable with — the national £7,500 BUS grant for heat pumps. For qualifying Wisbech households, it is possible to install a full heat pump and solar system for net costs of £2,000–£6,000 after all grants. We check eligibility during the free survey at no charge.
Why Wisbech Is Ideal for Solar
The Fens around Wisbech are as flat as any landscape in England. Annual solar irradiance of 1,040–1,060 kWh/m² and minimal cloud cover relative to western England give Wisbech properties above-average solar generation. A 4kW system in PE13 generates approximately 3,750–3,950 kWh annually — enough to cover around 60% of a typical household's electricity consumption.
We provide free, no-obligation surveys for all residential and commercial properties across PE13 and PE14. Contact us to book your survey and receive a detailed financial analysis within 48 hours.
