Heat Pump Installation in Cambridge: CB1–CB4 Guide, Costs and £7,500 Grant 2026

Cambridge is one of the most active heat pump markets in England. From CB1 Victorian terraces to CB4 post-war semis — the £7,500 BUS grant, CERP funding, and 0% VAT have made heat pumps financially compelling for most Cambridge properties.

Heat Pump Installation in Cambridge: CB1–CB4 Guide, Costs and £7,500 Grant 2026

Cambridge is consistently ranked among the top 10 local authority areas in England for new heat pump installations. The city's combination of a highly educated, environmentally motivated population, high household incomes (relative to UK average), and a progressive council planning environment has made it a national leader in heat pump adoption.

This guide specifically covers heat pump installation in CB1, CB2, CB3, and CB4 — the Cambridge city postcodes. It explains costs, the £7,500 BUS grant, suitability by property type, and what to expect from the installation process.

Heat Pump Suitability by Cambridge Postcode

Cambridge's diverse housing stock means suitability varies meaningfully by location:

  • CB1 (Romsey, Petersfield, Mill Road): Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Many are solid-walled, which raises heat loss. External wall insulation (or improved loft and floor insulation) helps significantly. A carefully sized heat pump — typically 8–10kW — works well in most CB1 properties.
  • CB2 (Trumpington, Coleridge, Cherry Hinton): Mix of post-war estates and Victorian housing. More cavity walls than CB1, making insulation upgrade faster and cheaper. Good heat pump candidates.
  • CB3 (Newnham, Grantchester, Barton): Large detached properties with good insulation in many cases. Ideal heat pump properties — ample space for outdoor unit, space for hot water cylinder, and large radiators. 8–12kW systems typical.
  • CB4 (Chesterton, Arbury, Milton Road): Post-war and modern housing, mostly cavity-walled. Excellent heat pump candidates. Many CB4 properties have been insulated, making heat pumps highly efficient.

Heat Pump Costs in Cambridge After the £7,500 Grant

Cambridge heat pump costs are consistent with the wider Cambridgeshire market, though installation complexity in Victorian terraces (particularly around locating the outdoor unit in restricted space) can add £500–£1,500 to the standard price.

  • 5–8kW system (CB1/CB2 terrace): Full cost £9,500–£12,500. After £7,500 grant: £2,000–£5,000.
  • 8–12kW system (CB3 detached): Full cost £12,000–£16,500. After £7,500 grant: £4,500–£9,000.
  • Radiator upgrades: £150–£300 per radiator if needed. A typical 3-bed property requires 2–4 upgrades.
  • Combined solar + heat pump: 5kW solar (£6,500–£8,500) + 8kW heat pump (net £5,000–£9,000 after grant) = £11,500–£17,500 total. Annual savings: £1,800–£2,600.

CERP Warm Homes Grant for Cambridge

Cambridge City Council participates in the CERP Warm Homes Local Grant, funded by £8.5 million for 2025–2028. Households with income below approximately £36,000 and an EPC rating of D or lower can access grants of up to £15,000 for a heat pump retrofit — which can be combined with the £7,500 BUS grant.

For qualifying Cambridge households, it is possible to install a heat pump for net costs of £1,000–£4,000. We assess CERP eligibility during every free home survey, at no cost and no obligation.

Planning and External Unit Location in Cambridge

Cambridge's conservation areas cover significant parts of the city — including most of CB1 south of Romsey and much of CB2 and CB3. Heat pump outdoor units are generally permitted development even in conservation areas, provided they are not installed on a wall or roof facing a highway and meet MCS noise standards.

In practice, almost every Cambridge property we survey has a suitable location for the outdoor unit — typically a rear garden, side passage, or in the case of terraces, the rear of the property accessed through the house. We assess this at the free survey and advise if any planning notification is needed.

Our Isleham base is 14 miles from Cambridge city centre, making us one of the most local MCS-certified heat pump installers serving CB1–CB4. We have completed over 80 heat pump installations across Cambridge and the surrounding villages.
